Suits star Patrick J. Adams is the second big name to leave the show after Meghan Markle's announcement last year.

Adams, 36, told the Hollywood Reporter that he decided to walk away from the show halfway through filming season seven because he was worried about becoming "another lawyer on television."

Entertainment news highlights

Bruno Mars cleans up at the Grammy awards and Lorde finds herself in the centre of a sexism row. Lisa Wilkinson makes her highly-anticipated debut on The Sunday Project and Jay-Z calls Donald Trump a 'superbug.'

Posting on his Instagram page, Adams described the past seven years as "life changing" and that he was looking forward to Suits' future without him.

"Playing a character that so many people all over the world have connected with has been one of the great honours of my life," he posted.

"Together we grew this misdirected brilliant pothead into a confident and capable man seeing all of his wildest dreams come true. Thank you for the wild ride. It's one I will never forget.

"Suits still very much remains and I look forward to seeing how it all unfolds."

The cheeky Prince has turned into a serious royal, as captured by a new film - no wonder his love life with actress Meghan Markle is blossoming.

Currently in its seventh season, the back half of episodes will resume in the United States on Wednesday March 28, culminating in a two-hour season finale on April 25. Characters Mike Ross and Rachel Zane will be farewelled in a wedding special.

Adams has promised any worried fans that episode 16 (the season finale) will give everyone the closure they need.

"A lot of times when actors leave shows, a gun gets pulled out in a courtroom or something," Adams said in a statement. "Without spoiling too much, yes, I think Mike and Rachel are two characters that there has never been any question that they're in love and that they're meant for each other."

He was also happy to step away with Markle, who is set to become a British royal following her engagement to Prince Harry.

"Mike Ross has taught me a lot about commitment, hard work and the power of believing in yourself and I feel blessed that now we both get to walk out into the lives that we never dreamed we would actually be lucky enough to live," he said in a recent statement.

Filling the gap for season eight will be former Pysch star Dule Hill, who plays Alex Williams and will be promoted to series regular along with returning stars Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter), Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen) and Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt).

Suits ranks as USA Network's second-highest-rated scripted drama series and its creator Aaron Korsh says cast and crew are excited to continue "the roller coaster ride" with fans.

"I would like to thank Patrick and Meghan for their extraordinary contributions over the last seven years," said Korsh. "Season eight will have everything from shifting alliances and internal power plays, to secrets, betrayals and fiery relationships. Keep an eye out for an adversarial new character that will give Harvey a run for his money."
