In the wake of Hollywood's sexual harassment scandal, all eyes were on the first major film and television event of the awards season.

And with first-time host Seth Meyers, there were plenty of jokes which cut pretty close to the bone.

Here are some of the moments that made us laugh, and wince.

Meyers started with a swipe at Hollywood

Meyers got straight into the tone of the evening saying: "Good evening ladies, and remaining gentlemen", a dig at the notable absentees of the event.

"Happy New Year Hollywood! It's 2018. Marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn't," Meyers quipped to a big applause from the A-list audience.

"There is a new era underway.

"It's been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood."

He likened himself to being the first host of an awards night since the scandal as being the "first dog they shot out into space".

He went on to say:

"The Golden Globes turned 75 this year …

Before actress Jessica Chastain delivered the punchline:

"The actor that plays its wife is still only 32."

The "elephant not in the room" was addressed

Meyers didn't beat around the bush, mentioning the Harvey Weinstein scandal early on.

"Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight," Meyers began.

"Because, well, I've heard rumours he's crazy and difficult to work with.

"But don't worry, he'll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during the in-memoriam."

Kevin Spacey got a mention

Noting the scandal which saw actor Kevin Spacey removed from production of the next season of House of Cards and Ridley Scott film, All The Money In The World, Meyers asked whether the television show would follow the movie's change.

"I was happy to hear they were going to do another season of House of Cards," he said.

"Is Christopher Plummer available for that too?

"I hope he can do a southern accent because Kevin Spacey sure couldn't.

"Is that too mean? … to Kevin Spacey?"

Trump was also on the hit list

Meyers also took credit for inspiring now US President Donald Trump to run for office.

"In 2011, I told some jokes about our current president at the White House correspondents' dinner," he said.

"Jokes about how he was unqualified to be president and some have said that night convinced him to run.

"So if that's true I just want to say, Oprah, you will never be president."

And there was another subtle dig through fellow Seth — actor Seth Rogan.

"I'm not even the most powerful Seth in the room tonight," Meyers said.

"Hey remember when he was the guy making trouble with North Korea?"

Meyers was referring to Rogan's controversial film The Interview, which was about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and the tensions between North Korea and the current US leader.

Amy Poehler delivered a cutting rebuke to host Seth Meyers' request to deliver a punchline

"I'm a woman in Hollywood, I don't need a set-up to make a punchline work," she said.

"Oh is that how it works? You're explaining something I already know. Is this the mansplaining part of the evening?"

When Meyers apologised, she replied: "another apology, how wonderful".

TOMMY WISEAU!

James Franco won the award for best actor for a motion picture musical or comedy for his ode to Tommy Wiseau's 'best worst movie' The Room.

"This was built as a movie about the best worst movie ever made, but it's a movie about friendship," Franco said.

That didn't stop an individual like Wiseau from stealing the limelight, making a pretend pass for the microphone before Franco's speech — "Good thinking!"
