People in Western Australia's north, including the popular tourist town of Broome, have been warned to prepare for a possible cyclone less than two weeks after Tropical Cyclone Hilda lashed the area.

A blue alert has been issued for coastal areas between Kuri Bay and Wallal Downs in the Kimberley region.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a tropical low is about 80km northwest of Wyndham and 140km southeast of Kalumburu.

The tropical low will move off the northwest Kimberley coast on Tuesday and may become a tropical cyclone by Wednesday or Thursday.

Gales with gusts to 100km/h may develop in coastal areas between Kuri Bay and Bidyadanga on Wednesday and may extend to Wallal Downs.

People have been warned to remove loose material from around homes and ensure emergency kits are up to date.

"Although there is no immediate danger you need to start preparing for dangerous weather," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns.
