He's one of the most divisive figures in pop music.

And in the early hours of Monday morning, an Australian comedian went viral for poking a stick at English musician Phil Collins.

Entertainment news highlights

The Last Jedi's massive opening weekend, Disney buys Fox's film and TV properties, Salma Hayek and Peter Jackson reveal more about Harvey Weinstein's history and Matt Damon in trouble over comments.

Not long after the last (of the legal) fireworks fizzed out over Melbourne's skyline, stand-up comic Sarah Bennetto tweeted that she had "grave news" for those living in parts of the world where it was still December 31.

"We did the Phil Collins 11:56:40 thing but it unlocked some kind of Hell portal," she tweeted. "Utter carnage here. Phil Collinses everywhere, gnawing at lampposts, smashing in shopfronts, rutting in the street. The horror, the horror."

The cheeky jab at the English drummer and singer-songwriter soon went viral, liked more than 30,000 times as of Monday morning.

"[That way] the drum break will play right as the clock strikes midnight. Start off your new year right," he wrote.

The internet was quick to make fun of the 66-year-old, with countless parodies doing the rounds on social media. Many poked fun at Collins' shameless attempt at self-promotion.
