Wind gusts of up to 81 kilometres per hour have been recorded in Beaudesert as severe thunderstorms bear down on south-east Queensland.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that areas between the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane, and Coolangatta on the border are at risk of damaging winds this afternoon.

In the latest severe weather warning, BOM said thunderstorms had been detected in Cleveland, Caboolture, Narangba and Burpengary.

They are moving towards the north-east.

They are forecast to affect Redcliffe, Beachmere, Bribie Island and Beerburrum and Caloundra, the area south-west of Caloundra, waters off Bribie Island and northern Bribie Island.

Damaging winds are likely.

A wind gust of 81kph has already been recorded at Beaudesert.

A more general warning issued by BOM says thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones for much of the afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Dalby, Ipswich, Stanthorpe, Caboolture and Goondiwindi.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services has advised:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees
  • Secure loose outdoor items
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500
