THE wife of a former Liberal Senator was injured in the Rundle St crash that also put three other women in hospital — as the driver is charged over the sickening smash.

Sally Chapman, 67, wife of Grant Chapman, is recovering at her eastern-suburbs home with a fractured kneecap, bruises and lacerations after the out-of-control BMW mounted the kerb in front of Target just after 4pm on Saturday.

She, alongside her friend Skye Jarvis, who is in a serious condition in Royal Adelaide Hospital, was heading towards the Adelaide Oval to watch the Ashes Test match.

As dramatic footage of the crash emerged, Mr Chapman, of Dulwich, told The Advertiser his wife told him the car “came out of nowhere” and there was no time to react.

“It all happened so quickly, she said she had no time to move at all by the time they realised the car was coming towards them,” he said.

”She’s still in a bit of aftershock and a fair bit of pain.”

Mrs Chapman remained in a leg brace but was “very appreciative” of the public, paramedics and doctors at Flinders Medical Centre who helped her.

A West Croydon woman, 32, suffered leg injuries while a North Adelaide woman, 26, had minor injuries.

The driver, a 40-year-old man of Hampstead Gardens who has not been named, was charged on Sunday with two counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving while he remained in a serious condition at the RAH.

Amid initial fears the incident was deliberate, Major Crime detectives were called in to investigate.

But they are no longer involved after police ruled out it being deliberate, and the investigation is being handled by the Major Crash division.

Harrowing dashcam footage obtained by 9 News showed the car careering through southbound traffic on Pulteney St when it tried to make the right-hand turn into Rundle St.

The vehicle mounted a footpath along the busy city thoroughfare and slammed into pedestrians before it was halted by a traffic light pole.

Police said reckless driving played a factor in the crash and more charges were expected to be laid on the man, who was known to police and is believed to have recently finished a stint in jail.

The driver is expected to have a bedside hearing on Monday.

Speaking at her home after visiting her son in hospital, his mother told Nine News: “My son never do something (deliberate) like that.”
