A former Marist Brother school principal found guilty of abusing boys in Sydney and Newcastle has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.

William Henry Wade, 81, who is also known as Brother Christopher Wade, was found guilty of assaulting two boys — one at Hamilton in 1976 and another at Kogarah in 1980.

The boys were assaulted in the headmaster's office after being sent there because they were unwell.

In sentencing Wade, Justice David Arnott said the offences were a grave breach of trust of his position.

Wade will serve a non-parole period of nine months.
