A four-month-old boy has been rushed to hospital after suffering critical facial injuries during an alleged attack in Brisbane's west, police said.
Officers were called to a street at The Gap after the child's mother called police.
The boy's 64-year-old grandmother is assisting police with their inquiries, but charges have not been laid.
Police said the boy and his mother were visiting from interstate and officers have described the scene as "distressing".
Inspector Daniel Bragg said the baby's mother awoke to sounds of the boy's cries about 6:30am.
"The mother went into the child's room and found the child in his cot with a second member of the family standing nearby," he said.
"A large knife was located nearby and police have taken possession of that."
It is understood the second member of the family police are referring to is the child's grandmother.
Police said the mother was currently at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital with her son and distraught over the attack.
"Clearly when a young child has sustained such critical injuries this isn't the work of a well-adjusted, happy individual," Inspector Bragg said.
The baby is undergoing surgery.
Inspector Bragg said officers were talking to the boy's grandmother to establish exactly what occurred.
"The child has sustained serious cuts to his face — this is the worst-case scenario," he said.
"The ambulance officers who attended were visibly distressed by what they were dealing with.
"Can I say the police officer — who was the first on the scene who did an amazing job — was clearly visibly affected by what he saw."
He said he understood the baby and his mother did not live at the residence.
Forensic and scientific officers along with detectives are at the scene as part of the investigation.
