A popular web documentary filmed in the remote Northern Territory community of Ramingining is returning for a second season, with production set to begin this week.

Black As follows three Yolgnu men — Chico and Dino Wanybarrnga and Jerome Lilipyana — and their adopted brother Joe Smith on their adventures in the community 560 kilometres east of Darwin.

Across 24 episodes, the boys encounter crocs, bombs, break downs and much more.

The first season has now been viewed more than 140 million times across the world.

'Just a normal day of life for us boys'

One of the stars, Smith, said not a lot of planning went into a day of filming.

"As things out here in the remote areas tend to do, it sort of goes to plan and then halfway down through that plan it falls apart," he said.

"It's just a normal day of life for us boys pretty much."

The series is directed by David Batty, the man behind another iconic Aussie documentary series Bush Mechanics.

He said people loved watching the boys in action.

"People just love it," he said.

"They love seeing them be ingenious and engaging with nature and the bush and living off the land.

"I'm just following the guys, and things unfold and unexpected things happen."

He said online distribution had given the show an incredibly broad audience.

"I think it's given a lot of people a real insight into Aboriginal society, Aboriginal culture and particularly into the Aboriginal sense of humour," he said.

Hopes for feature film

Smith said a lot of people wanted more of the show, so they would be working hard to deliver.

"We're gonna try and make it more interesting, and just do what we do," he said.

"We don't know what's going to happen, pretty much."

Batty said he expected the show to garner the same audience reach this season, and he hoped to take it further in the future.

"I think the outcome from that would be that we might work towards a feature film at some point. We've created the audience … there's an incredible demand."
