Almost 30 flights have been cancelled or delayed on Friday as airlines grapple with the fall-out from Thursday's wild weather that caused chaos at Sydney Airport.

Queues have been growing at Sydney Airport's domestic terminals since early in the morning as passengers whose flights were cancelled in Thursday's high winds attempt to get on re-booked services.

Wild winds bring havoc to Sydney Airport

Over 100 flights have been cancelled at Sydney airport due to strong winds. Vision: Channel Seven.

Almost 100 flights were cancelled on Thursday when strong wind gusts of up to 72km/h caused the closure of two of Sydney Airport's three runways.

Priority was given to international flights, with thousands of domestic passengers left stranded in Sydney.

The cancellations have thrown the domestic flight schedule into chaos with all airlines affected.

It is not known how long it will take to clear the backlog but some passengers have been told they may have to wait for days to get on another flight.

Those delayed included AFL fans flying to Melbourne to watch the semi-final between the Sydney Swans and Geelong at the MCG tonight.

More strong winds are forecast on Friday with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting westerly winds of up to 40km/h.

Passengers have been advised to check directly with their airlines to see if their flights have been affected.

A Sydney Airport spokeswoman said all the runways were operating as normal but that may change later in the day if the wind picks up.
