Police have withdrawn two charges against rugby player Scott Higginbotham after "extensive negotiations" with his lawyer.

The Queensland Reds player and Wallabies forward was originally charged with assaulting police and unlawfully being in a police establishment during an incident in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley night precinct in February.

The assault charge was then downgraded to obstructing police.

Higginbotham was listed to be sentenced on Friday morning, but the prosecution dropped the charges during a brief hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He did not appear in person at the hearing.

Higginbotham's lawyer Angelo Venardos said there had been extensive negotiations with police.

"He is very pleased that the matter is behind him," he said.

"It's a difficult situation, the Valley policing, but Scott has the uttermost respect for the police.

"There is certainly no ill will towards the police whatsoever."
