Canberra schools will compete in the ACT finals of the Todd Woodbridge Cup on Wednesday, with the winner earning a shot at challenging Sydney's best in November.

The event has seen more that 250 kids from 13 schools competing in regional gala days over the past few months.

Last year's event saw just four Canberra teams compete for a place in the finals in an invite only process.

But a push by Tennis ACT school development coordinator Geoff Bartlett has seen that figure grow.

Bartlett was disappointed by the lack of access to younger kids and hails the competition as the key to kids developing interest in tennis at a younger age.

"One of the issues we've had in Canberra is the lack of an entry level form of the sport. The kids can often be a bit scared and reluctant to start playing on the full court straight away, but the modified version for this competition has been a big hit," Bartlett said.

"The teachers love it because it's easy to deliver, and it's giving kids in years three and four who don't ever get the chance to represent their school that opportunity."

Eight teams from seven schools will square off tomorrow, with the winner moving on to face the winners of NSW regional competitions at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on November 9.
