1. Australian police want more access to your data. The Australian government wants new powers to access encrypted communications although many Australians are unaware that police already have various powers to access metadata, the contents of digital conversations and computer networks.

2. Amazon could launch in Australia as soon as October to take advantage of the Christmas retail boom, according to Citi analysts. In a note to clients this week, the team, led by Bryan Raymond, says Amazon has already placed its first orders with suppliers, suggesting a pre-Christmas launch is likely.

3. Meanwhile, here’s how Australian supermarkets are preparing for the arrival of AmazonFresh, which is likely to occur in late 2018. In an effort to boost price competitiveness, Coles and Woolworths are increasingly expanding their product ranges to include private-label products and phantom brands, which have lower pricepoints than branded products.

4. Insect-like six-legged robots are being trained as rescuers. The CSIRO, Australia’s peak science body, is working on using them to go into an unpredictable, unstable environment and help people escape from a disaster.
