Fourteen tries, 82 points and a Canberra Raiders win. James Amedee knows he's asking a lot, but he's hoping the Raiders answer his prayers and deliver a win ... and a $500,000 prize on Saturday.

Who cares about the Raiders missing the finals when you've got half a million reasons to smile?

The catch for long-time Raiders sufferer Amedee is that his chance to win $500,000 relies on the Raiders smashing premiership favourites Melbourne by the perfect score.

So the golden numbers for Amedee's Raiders' membership lottery are: 46, 36, eight and six.

To win the prize, Amedee needs the Raiders to win 46-36 and score eight tries to Melbourne's six. Sounds simple enough.

But these are the numbers Amedee has been sitting on for almost 12 months as part of a Raiders' membership initiative to give fans a chance to win $500,000 if they correctly predicted how many points and tries Canberra would score and concede after 24 games.

So while the Raiders' finals hopes are dead, Amedee and six others are still alive in what could be a life-changing moment for the Green Machine army.

If the Raiders can pull it off, Amedee's finals heartbreak will be replaced with half a million reasons to smile in a remarkable end to an otherwise disappointing season.

Amedee is considered the best placed member to take the prize. But even his chances are slim given the Raiders have never scored more than 40 points against the Storm and have won just four of 20 games in Melbourne in 19 years.

The Storm has lost just four of 23 games this year and have beaten the Raiders by an average of 24-14 across 39 games since 1998. It's well short of the target Amedee needs.

"But there's a chance," Amedee laughed.

"If I was to win it, it would be fantastic. I'll be watching the whole thing and if the score gets anywhere near it, I don't know what I'll do.

"I know it's far-fetched, but at least there's a chance. Beating the best team in the comp and scoring eight tries ... I guess you never know."

The Raiders have scored 552 points and conceded 465 this season. They've scored 94 tries and conceded 79 tries.

Amedee predicted the Raiders would score 598 points and 102 tries while conceding 501 points and 85 tries.

"It gives me another reason to watch this week rather than just thinking about missing the finals, there's something in it for me I guess," Amedee said.

"When I was coming up with the numbers, I looked at what we did last year and fudged them a bit either way of that, and came up with these final numbers.

"I thought we would be pretty close to 2016 one way or the other, so that's what I went with. I had a look at it midway through the year but it was too early to know if you were any chance at all.

"I haven't thought about it until I got the call this week, so it was a nice surprise."

Would he give it all back to see the Raiders play in the finals this year?

"Gee, it's a toss up. I'm pretty passionate, but I don't know if I'm that passionate," Amedee said.

Raiders fan numbers swelled this year, with an average crowd of 14,097 attending every game in Canberra for the best turnout in 22 years.

The club overhauled its membership program in a bid to win back support off the back of a stellar 2016 NRL season.

They partnered with Austbrokers Canberra to offer members the chance to enter the for-and-against lottery if they signed up before a specific date, and Amedee had forgotten all about it until he got a call on Tuesday morning.

Amedee lives in Sydney, but started supporting the Raiders in 1991 after watching a video of his dad, a Tigers fan, throw a chair off a balcony after Canberra won the 1989 grand final.

Most expected the Raiders to ignite a premiership era this season, but the team failed to fire on the field and will finish 10th on the ladder.

They were relying on other teams to lose games to save their play-off hopes before being knocked out by Manly last weekend.

It was a sad end to what was supposed to be a season of hope. But at least a small group of Raiders fans have something to cheer for against the Storm.

"I really need the back line to fire ... a couple to either winger and a few in the middle and we're almost there," Amedee said.

"It will be edge of the seat stuff. Makes the last round exciting. And as I said, there's a chance."
