Swifty is back and, boy, is she cross.

After making her fans wait three lifetimes (OK, it was only three years), she has rewarded their patience with a cranky little ditty going by the name of Look What You Made Me Do.

Taylor Swift drops new single Look What You Made Me Do

The pop star released her first new song in almost three years, dropping the highly anticipated single Look What You Made Me Do and reigniting feuds in the process.

If you haven't been following the Taylor Swift/Kayne West/Kim Kardashian feud that has been running for the past few years, you can get a potted history just here.

Or you can listen to Look What You Made Me Do and catch up on Taylor's feelings about it all.

She doesn't like Kanye's tilted stage, or his kingdom keys and old Taylor can't come to the phone because she is dead.

Boy oh boy, if you thought her diss track about Katy Perry (Bad Blood) was cranky, that was a mere entree for the main meal she makes of Kanye in Look What You Made Me Do.

Musically, Swift has diverted about as far away from her sweet pop princess country roots as a person can; gone are the saccharine ear worms of yore, he isn't Romeo and she isn't Juliet, she isn't shaking anything off and there isn't a love story to be found in the lyrics nor the music.

The track opens with a relatively peaceful yet ominous string/piano combo before that gets shoved to the side for some driving bass drum and Swift repeating a five-note refrain about all the things she doesn't like about West.

The repetitive opening sets the theme for the whole song, with lyrics and refrains repeated throughout. The whole chorus is just Look What You Made Me Do on rotation.

Vocally, Swift is in fine form. She has an incredibly powerful lower register and uses it to her full potential throughout the track before sweeping in with the sweeter notes at the top that come from nowhere as a bit of pleasant relief from the anger.

She utilises sprechgesang (spoken singing) repeatedly throughout the song. Maybe Reputation is going to be a hip hop album.

Swift doesn't seem to do anything without design, and the choice of Look What You Made Me Do as the lead single from the upcoming album is almost definitely a calculated one.

But whether it was calculated to generate as much attention as possible due to the content, or whether it signals that her music will continue moving away from love stories about ex-boyfriends and cover all the times she has been crossed... well, we are going to have to wait and see.

But one thing is sure, this is not the catchiest song Swift has released. Even after several listens, I struggle to recall anything beyond the chorus.

I could (and have) sung most of her big hits in the car, but motorists can commute without fear that they will hear me belting out this one.
