A blistering Raheem Sterling volley has forced a 1-1 draw and prevented Everton from nabbing an upset win over Premier League title favourites Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney's second goal in his second Premier League game this season had his side beaming after the 35th minute.

It was also the 200th Premier League goal for Rooney, who started his career in blue way back in the 2001/02 season before moving to Manchester United and becoming an icon.

But he appears to be enjoying something of a career renaissance since leaving United in the offseason, scoring in Everton's season opener against Stoke before joining Alan Shearer (260) as the only players to reach the 200-goal mark in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin cut inside Fernandinho and squared the ball to Rooney, whose first-time shot struck goalkeeper Ederson Moraes' heel and deflected into the net off the post.

Rooney was being jeered relentlessly by City's fans and wheeled away in delight after his close-range goal against the run of play, cupping both ears with his hands in front of the home supporters.

"It was a sweet moment," he said.

"I am sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed it as well."

But his joy would not last, with Sterling finding the equaliser in the 82nd minute.

After a cross came into the box, Everton right-back Mason Holgate attempted to head the ball clear but only found Sterling, who drove his right foot through the ball at his earliest convenience, sending it into the bottom left corner.

Rooney, perhaps frustrated by Everton missing out on a fifth clean sheet from five competitive games this season, picked up a booking for dissent.
