Melbourne Airport is opening UberX wait zones for passengers travelling to and from the airport.

From Wednesday, passengers at terminals T1, T2 and T3 will be able to use an UberX pick-up zone at Lane 1 of the main terminal forecourt.

The pick-up zone for terminal T4 passengers will be at Level 2 inside the Transport Hub.

Passengers will be dropped off anywhere along Departures Drive.

But Uber passengers will be hit with an "airport access charge" of $4 per trip.

Chief of Parking and Ground Access at Melbourne Airport, Lorie Argus, welcomed the Uber wait zone.  

"Through expanding our transport offering we're giving our travellers more choice and flexibility.

"Melbourne Airport has worked closely with Uber to develop the right infrastructure in order to make the service work well for both drivers and travellers."
 
Uber's state manager for Victoria, Lucas Groeneveld​, said this was a "big win for consumer choice, tourism and the Victorian travelling public".
 

 

  
Taxis will continue to operate from the inner lane of the Melbourne Airport forecourt and the ground floor of terminal T4 Transport Hub.

Chief executive of Victorian Taxi Association, Georgia Nicholls, said she was confident that passengers "will continue to grab a taxi from the airport".

 "We understand ride-sharing providers will be charged for access in a similar way that taxis are and welcome this equality for commercial providers.

"With the prominent kerb-side location of taxis, we're confident passengers will continue to grab a taxi from the airport."

Uber already has wait zones at Canberra and Sydney airports. Victoria's first Uber pick-up area opened at Avalon Airport in August last year.

The introduction of the Uber wait zone at Melbourne Airport comes after a bill was passed in State Parliament last week changing the registration system for commercial passenger vehicles.
