Corey Brown has a good book of rides at Rosehill on Saturday.

UNBEATEN colt Siege Of Quebec has the class to overcome what co-trainer Adrian Bott admits is a very big negative in the feature $150,000 Smithfield RSL Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

The boom youngster hasn’t raced since July 15 when he outgunned another smart galloper in Calculated over 1400m — and it’s that 300m drop in distance that worries Bott.

“You’d expect him to be a bit vulnerable,’’ Bott said. “If ever they are going to beat him, this is it. He’s dropping from 1400m to 1100m but that’s the class we think of this colt, good horses are able to overcome it.’’

Despite that query, Siege Of Quebec shares TAB Fixed Odds favouritism at $3.10 with Golden Slipper fourth placegetter Menari.

The $1.2 million yearling buy has led all the way to win both his starts and, while he may land in front from the inside barrier, Bott is adamant he’s going to be versatile enough to handle whatever unfolds.

“From a good draw, hopefully he can put himself right in the race but he’s not a one dimensional horse that has to lead,’’ Bott said. “In his two starts the races have been lacking speed and he’s been able to dominate from the front.

“I’m expecting a bit more early speed and we’ll have to assess that to see where he ends up.’’

There are other factors that lead Bott to be quietly confident.

After a solid gallop on the course proper at Randwick on Tuesday, he said the colt was sharp enough and will receive 6kg at the handicaps from Menari and Diamond Tathagata.

“It’s a competitive race but he’s a winning chance,’’ he said. “He’s race-fit against horses resuming and you should use those factors, including a weight pull, to your advantage.

“Now’s a good time to try and capitalise and this will help him become a more seasoned horse.’’

Naturally, Siege Of Quebec is heading towards next month’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) for which he’s on the second line of betting at $15.

Tough stablemate Arbeitsam is being asked to step back up in distance in the Merrylands RSL Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m).

The four-year-old was run down by Vaucluse Bay, after being taken on in front, over the same trip a month ago then led all the way when back to 1400m two weeks later.

Thinking a little along the same lines as with Siege Of Quebec, Bott said he’s taking advantage of a sizeable weight drop by running in the longer race.

“We’ve seen he can handle the distance,’’ he said. “By putting him in the open handicap he benefits from getting weight relief as opposed to the 61.5kg he would have carried in the 1500m race. We think he will get 2000m in time. I don’t think that will worry him, he’s already proven his versatility.’’

The trainer is confident lightly raced mare Slumber Party is poised to post her second career win in the ClubsNSW Handicap (1400m) after a gallant second here two weeks ago. The mare went down fighting behind Suspenders, who lines up against her again, at her first run in six weeks.

“I think the distance is ideal for her,’’ Bott said. “I thought she was very good last start, she hit a bit of a flat spot in the race before getting going. She gets a couple of kilos turnaround on the horse that beat her last start and I think she’s still improving.’’

Next month’s Newcastle Cup could be on the short-term agenda for resuming stayer Dee I Cee. Bott said the six-year-old was likely to be outpaced in the Canterbury RSL Spring Preview (1400m) but is satisfied with how he’s trialling and working of late.

“He’s coming up well but he’s a little more dour now he’s getting older,’’ he said. “He might find a couple of these a bit sharper and he’ll improve as he gets over further.’’

Dee I Cee was runner-up in last year’s Newcastle Cup before finishing midfield in The Metropolitan (Group 1).

Trial displays buoy Brown’s confidence

BARRIER trial form can be very hit and miss but jockey Corey Brown has been so taken with the hitouts of a trio of his mounts at Rosehill Gardens he’s anticipating a surprise or two.

Brown, who wanted it known he’s not a fan of pre-race interviews when he has a good selection of rides, said he’s eager to partner Denmagic, I Am Excited and Etymology in their returns.

“I hate getting carried away spruiking horses but every one of these horses impressed me with their trials,’’ Brown said. “But I’ve only ever trialled them. I’ve never been on them under race conditions.’’

Denmagic ($7) has only won two of her 22 starts and Brown said, had she drawn better in the Dooleys Handicap (1100m), he’d be more bullish. But on the back of her length win in a 794m trial at Warwick Farm two weeks ago, he can only see the mare running well.

“I was a little disappointed with the barrier (nine),’’ Brown said. “She’s one of those horses that seems to always have a hard-luck story. She’s in terrific form. I went out and galloped both of David’s (Pfieffer) horses last Tuesday morning and both are in fine order.

“She’s going to need luck from that barrier but if she gets it she’ll be really hitting the line.’’

The other Pfieffer-trained galloper Brown refers to is emerging filly I Am Excited, who faces a big test in the Listed $150,000 Smithfield RSL Rosebud (1100m).

I Am Excited ($10) was placed in a Listed event on debut then easily overcame a wide barrier to win at Warwick Farm back on May 31. She won her trial on the same morning as Denmagic and clocked just 0.2 seconds slower than her older stablemate.

“It’s not as big a task as what you first think,’’ Brown said. “With what she’s done at the trials and what she’s shown in her work, I’d be disappointed if she doesn’t run a blinder.

“Horses like Menari coming back as three-year-olds with the preparations they’ve had, tough runs on heavy tracks, can sometimes zap the life out of them.

“She’s on the up and we’ll be seeing a lot more of her.’’

Brown warned dual Derby placegetter Etymology ($16) may surprise a few when he has his first start for 14 months in the Spring Preview (1400m).

The Godolphin galloper actually contested all four major derbies as a three-year-old, finishing second in the VRC Derby, fifth in the ATC Derby, second in the SA Derby and seventh in the Queensland Derby. Brown has ridden the gelding in both trials and said he doesn’t feel like a horse that hasn’t raced for that long.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he jumps out of the ground on what he’s shown me in his trials,’’ he said. “He’s racing quite soon after his trial but I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t run well. He’s a nice, big horse and will be able to cope with it. Whatever he does, I know he will improve a lot.’’

Emerging stayer Vaucluse Bay is in line for a hat-trick in the Fairfield RSL Club Handicap (2000m) after coasting to a four-length win over the same course a fortnight ago.

While up 6.5kg due to winning and dropping in grade, Brown said he had every reason to be confident the $2.25 favourite can win again.

“I know he has a lot of weight compared to last time but the way he did it the other day ... for a horse to accelerate like that was excellent,’’ Brown said. “His sectionals for the last 600m would’ve been pretty good for a staying sort of horse.

“He’s done nothing but improve and I think he’s a really nice stayer in the making.’’

Easily the most interesting of Brown’s mounts at Rosehill Gardens is the Brett Cavanough-trained debutant Another Sin in the TAB Highway Handicap (1100m).

The three-year-old has been a major firmer in betting, after opening $14, and assumed favouritism last night on the back of his impressive Scone trial win.

Brown hasn’t had anything to do with the gelding but said he knew once he saw the trial he wanted to be on board.

“Brett called me a while ago and he said, ‘we’ve been hiding this horse’ and I went and had a look at the trial and said to him ‘you haven’t done a good job of hiding him’,’’ Brown said. “The way he trialled up there it was pretty impressive and Brett must have an opinion of him to bring him to this race.’’

Meanwhile, apprentice James Innes jnr will see a physiotherapist in a bid to be fit to ride at Rosehill. Innes hurt his shoulder in an incident at Kembla Grange on Thursday aboard Teodosio, who was crowded between runners shortly after the start of a 1000m race.

Trained by Innes’ master, Gerald Ryan, Teodosio ran home to finish a good second.

Ryan said Innes, who has five booked rides at Rosehill, had treatment yesterday afternoon and will ride trackwork this morning to test his fitness. Innes has five handy rides, with Mariquita ($8.50) in race eight his best.
