Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle is back in hospital for what is believed to be a third fight against leukaemia, Golf Australia says.

A statement from the sport's governing body said Lyle was resting at Royal Melbourne Hospital awaiting tests.

Lyle's family said, "A routine blood test returned earlier this week returned abnormal results" and Lyle was now in the hands of his previous medical specialist.

"He will remain there at least until a full diagnosis has been made," the family spokesman said.

"He has undergone several tests and will have several more in the coming days.

"At this point, we have not yet received complete test results, so there is no definitive diagnosis and we do not have an agreed treatment plan.

"We cannot speculate about anything until we get more information.

"We are grateful to be surrounded by incredibly supportive people and we truly appreciate your consideration and respect for our privacy at this time."

The 35-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 17 and went into remission two years later, in 2000, before beginning his professional golf career in 2004.

He fought for his life after a relapse in 2012, but fought his way back and resumed playing on the Australian tour at the end of 2013.
