Aaron and Daniella Winter never thought they would win the 2017 season of House Rules. 

They'd just welcomed their second child into the world and were running on very little sleep. Throw the "pressure cooker" format of the show into the mix, and the couple thought they would buckle under the stress.

But instead of bowing out, the pair rose to the occasion and on Sunday evening were crowned the winners of Channel Seven's top-rating renovation show.  

"It's been a massive rollercoaster," Daniella said. "Sometimes you want to get off it, but sometimes it's an amazing ride." 

The mother of two, from Queensland, admitted the show was incredibly tough given she had undergone an emergency C-section just weeks before the cameras started rolling. 

"Can my body deal with this right now?" she remembered asking herself. "But because we kept going through to the next phase [of the competition], it was a bit a shock. We never thought we'd get this far." 

There was also, of course, the guilt the couple felt spending long periods apart from their children. Luckily, both Daniella and Aaron's families pitched in to help. 

Danny's mum and dad would babysit newborn Brooklyn during the week, while Aaron's parents would look after his older brother Jaxon. Daniella's sister, meanwhile, looked after both kids on the weekends. 

"It would not have been possible without their help," Aaron admitted. 

"We could split the money and give them some," Danny joked. "But... a coffee. Maybe we'll gve them just a coffee." 

Apart from taking home $200,000 in prize money – which will go towards the family's mortage and the boys' education – Aaron said he and his wife have become much closer after their time on the show. 

"We are better at dealing with everyday things," he said. "Other than that, Danny didn't know how to hang a piece of artwork... and now look at her. She knows how to renovate a house in a week!"
