Virgin billionaire Sir Richard Branson has given The Project viewers a cringefest, after flirting awkwardly with co-host Sarah Harris.

The Studio 10 host, filling in for Carrie Bickmore behind the desk, was left red-faced as Branson complimented her outfit and offered to fly her to the moon (literally).

Flirty Richard Branson on The Project

Talking about space travel and Obama, billionaire Richard Branson gets saucy on The Project.

The tension started immediately when Harris complimented Branson's infamous appearance in drag, following a lost bet with AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes in 2013.

"Well, I'd love to show you my legs, darling," the flamboyant businessman giggled in reply.

Branson, with his shirt seductively unbuttoned, was later recalling his efforts at winning over his wife by buying Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands in the late '70s, when Harris shifted the conversation to his space exploration attempts.

"Is your pursuit of space also to impress a girl, and when is it happening?" the host asked Branson.

"Darling, when should we go to the moon?" he replied, forcing Harris to break into uncomfortable laughter.

Branson then doubled-down on his chat-up, recalling a past encounter with Harris.

"The last time we met was in a hangar about ten years ago and I can still remember... And look, lady in red, she must've had a crush on me," he added.

Harris was left flustered as the show's credits rolled, caught off-guard by the billionaire's glowing reverie.

But comedian Tommy Little got in the last quip.

"Sarah," he mock-whispered across the desk. "Get him to buy you a planet."

Branson, in the country to tend to his Virgin Australia airline, also discussed his high-profile hang with former US president Barack Obama, who fled to Branson's island for a holiday in the wake of Donald Trump's election win.

But he refused to reveal Obama's thoughts on his successor.

"Trump is hanging himself without [Obama] having to say anything. Every day is just ghastly what comes out of the White House," Branson told host Waleed Aly.

"Obama stays above it all, and I think that's a sensible thing to do, not to try and get in the dirt with that individual."
