Australian stocks lost ground on the last day of the financial year, eating into gains over the 12 months.

At the close the ASX200 was at 5,721.50, down 96.60 points or 1.66% for the day.

Over the 12 months the index gained 9.3%.

The ASX200 hit a high of 5956, not quite making 5900, in May before sliding.
