Canberra ex-sparky David Toussaint has defeated Shane Mosley Jr as part of the undercard for the Manny Pacquiao versus Jeff Horn fight in Brisbane.

One year ago, Toussaint decided to quit his job as an electrician and take up boxing full time.

Today, in the biggest fight of his fledging career, he defeated the son of boxing legend Shane 'Sugar' Mosley.

Toussaint's family and friends gathered thousands of kilometres away at the Woden Hellenic Club in Canberra to watch him take out the title.

But there was little need for nerves, across eight rounds Toussaint landed more scoring punches and was awarded the bout on points in a split decision.

Throughout the fight Toussaint remained unintimidated by the size of the occasion and paid tribute to his opponent after the fight.

"Against such a good fighter in Shane Mosley Jr, his old man is an American legend," he said.

"He's from a great pedigree, it's the home of boxing - America, so really glad to have him here.

"I just want to say thanks to the crowd, it's unreal, I can't believe it."

Toussaint's cousin Paul Picker said the world was now at the Canberran's feet.

"I spoke to him yesterday and just said to him 'mate this is your time'," he said.

"He deserves it, he's a great fighter ... he wants this.

"It was great to watch and I'm just stoked. This is his launchpad.

"He's focused, he comes from a great family and he's got a bloody good head on him and he'll go on to bigger and better things."
