DONALD Trump has escalated his feud with MSNBC TV hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, labelling one of them “crazy†and the other “dumb as a rockâ€.
The war of words started on Thursday, when Mr Trump unleashed a stunning attack on the pair, who host the breakfast show Morning Joe together and are also engaged.
THE TRIGGER
The president’s temper appeared to have been triggered by a panel discussion on the morning show, which aired shortly before his Twitter tirade.
Mr Scarborough and Ms Brzezinski led a segment criticising and mocking the fake Time Magazine cover that reportedly hangs on the walls inside Mr Trump’s golf clubs. The cover shows Mr Trump with his arms folded, while the headline praises the success of his TV show The Apprentice.
No such cover was ever printed by Time.
“Nothing makes a man feel better than making a fake cover of a magazine about himself, lying every day and destroying the country. It’s a good feeling,†Ms Brzezinski said. She didn’t stop there, calling Mr Trump the man with the “teensy†hands.
“The guy with the little hands ... I was talking about Trump,†she added, just to make sure everyone got her point.
The president is notoriously sensitive about his hands, so much so that he assured the American people there was “no problem†with their size during a televised presidential debate. Read into that what you will.
THE RESPONSE
After the president’s tweets and the fearsome backlash they ignited from his critics, the two MSNBC hosts wrote a joint article in the Washington Post attacking his “unhealthy obsession†with their show.
“During the campaign, (Mr Trump) called Mika “neurotic†and promised to attack us personally after the campaign ended. This year, top White House staff members warned that the National Enquirer was planning to publish a negative article about us unless we begged the president to have the story spiked. We ignored their desperate pleas,†the pair wrote.
The National Enquirer, a tabloid magazine, infamously published several conspiracy theories about the president’s political opponents during the Republican primaries last year — for example, it alleged the father of Ted Cruz, one of Mr Trump’s rivals, was involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Mr Trump is close friends with the magazine’s boss, David Pecker.
“Mr Trump claims that we asked to join him at Mar-a-Lago three nights in a row. That is false. He also claimed that he refused to see us. That is laughable,†Mr Scarborough and Ms Brzezinski continued.
“Mr. Trump also claims that Mika was ‘bleeding badly from a facelift.’ That is also a lie.â€
THE ESCALATION
That is the context for today’s escalation, as Mr Trump again lashed out at the two hosts on Twitter.
“Crazy Joe Scarborough and dumb as a rock Mika are not bad people, but their low-rated show is dominated by their NBC bosses. Too bad!†the president said.
He followed that up by defending his use of Twitter, which had been called into question once again by the controversy. Even the president’s political allies have suggested his habit of launching personal attacks via the social media platform has distracted from his agenda.
“The FAKE AND FRAUDULENT NEWS MEDIA is working hard to convince Republicans and others I should not use social media. But remember, I won the 2016 election with interviews, speeches and social media. I had to beat Fake News, and did. And we will continue to WIN!†he said.
“My use of social media is not presidential — it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL.â€
So, we probably shouldn’t expect the president’s colourful Twitter rants to stop anytime soon.
