Telecommunications giant Telstra announced today that “free and unlimited†wi-fi would be available at 4,000 public locations around Australia for Tuesday June 20 only.
The promotion is to mark the activation of the 1 millionth site in the Telstra Air wi-fi network, activated at Mildura on Monday. Normally, only eligible Telstra customers are able to access the Air hotspots for free, but the gates will be flung open for Tuesday to anyone with a wi-fi device.
Telstra Air general manager Viveca Samuelsson said Australians were “getting savvier†at using wi-fi hotspots instead of using up their mobile data allowances, with Air usage more than doubling in the past 12 months.
“With a million hotspots now live, our eligible mobile and broadband customers can tap into free and unlimited Wi-Fi data to stream, share and post at more of their favourite beach areas, parks, shopping precincts and holiday destinations,†she said.
Below are the connection instructions from the telco if you have a wi-fi device on June 20 at a Telstra Air hotspot, which are usually located at pink payphone booths and some Telstra retail stores:
Step 1: Open the list of available networks on your mobile device and connect to ‘Telstra Free Wi-Fi’
Step 2: A pop up browser should automatically open. If it doesn’t:
- Open an internet browser on your device (Safari, Google Chrome, IE etc)
- Try to access any website (Facebook, YouTube)
- This will trigger the portal to open
Step 3: Click ‘connect’ to accept the Terms and conditions
Step 4: You will see a ‘success’ screen and can now access free wi-fi
