Sixth-grader Ananya Vinay has won America's Scripps National Spelling Bee, becoming the 13th consecutive Indian-American to do so.

The winning word? "Marocain", which means a type of dress fabric. (But you knew that, right?)

She seized the moment after her opponent Rohan Rajeev, who she'd duelled with for nearly 20 rounds, flubbed the simple-looking but obscure Scandinavian-derived word "marram", which is a type of beach grass.

"It's like a dream come true. I'm so happy right now," Ananya said.

She'll take home more than $US40,000 in cash and prizes. We don't have that sort of money to give away, unfortunately, but we can offer you the chance to feel smart — or, as is realistically more likely, a bit dumb.
