Sydney's Taronga Zoo is celebrating the birth of a male Asian elephant.

Elephant Pak Boon gave birth to the 130-kilogram calf on Friday morning following a pregnancy lasting almost two years.

A zoo spokesman said the birth was relatively quick, lasting just over half an hour, with both mother and calf in good health.
