MAROONS maestro Johnathan Thurston is in danger of missing Origin I after injuring his shoulder in Australia’s defeat of New Zealand in the Anzac Test last night.

Queensland coach Kevin Walters faces a nervous wait after Thurston underwent scans this morning after suffering a fresh injury unrelated to the calf complaint he carried into the Anzac Test.

It is understood Thurston has sustained a grade two shoulder tear, an injury that requires a four-to-six week recovery.

State of Origin I will be played on May 31 at Suncorp Stadium - meaning Thurston will almost certain be ruled out of the series opener if scans confirm a grade-two tear.

The loss of Thurston would be a crushing blow for the Maroons, who have already lost prop Matt Scott and star centre Greg Inglis to serious knee injuries.

Cowboys football operations chief Peter Parr said any suggestion Thurston _ who has played 36 consecutive Origin games _ will miss Origin I is premature.

“Everyone is jumping the gun a bit,” Parr said.

“He has had the scans but we’ll get our medical staff to look at the scans on Monday.

“The scan has been emailed to our doctors and they will have a look at it

“Any talk about any length of time out for JT is premature. We don’t have an official diagnosis yet.”

Walters said he was unaware of the extent of Thurston’s injury when contacted today by The Courier-Mail.

“This is news to me. I hope it’s not serious,” Walters said.

“To be honest, I haven’t even thought of a Plan B to replace Thursto, so if he’s out, I’ll have to sit down with the selectors and go through our options.

“Fingers crossed JT is OK, we certainly can’t afford too many more injuries.”
