Leigh Broxham has been called many things through his A-League career, but the criticism heard in the early stages – he's too small, too slow or just not good enough – isn't bandied around any more.

These days, Broxham enjoys adulation from the AAMI Park faithful, being the ultimate utility and club man, and was once memorably coined as Melbourne Victory's Javier Mascherano.

The roar from the stands when Broxham netted Victory's third goal in the 2015 grand final, against Sunday's grand final opponents Sydney FC, was proof of that. But for Broxham to be called a four-time A-League champion – that would be something.

"You start your career looking for the next contract and trying to achieve things personally ... you don't think about that do you?" the 29-year-old said on the possibility of a fourth championship. Then as your career evolves you start thinking about team things. Hopefully there's a few more to come."

Few would begrudge Broxham his success – he began his A-League career not as a player but as Victory's kit man. Since then, he has tallied 200 A-League games, three titles and thousands of fans in a career of rich rewards.

He'll line up in central midfield alongside captain Carl Valeri in Sunday's grand final and be given the job of marking Johnny Warren medal winner Milos Ninkovic.

And when he does, Broxham will move past Nikolai Topor-Stanley to become the fifth most-capped A-League player ever.

Despite his longevity, Sunday's match will bring something new for Broxham and Victory – an away grand final. Victory have hosted four of the deciders in Melbourne, and have won three of those.

Broxham said Victory's players would look to break new ground by winning one on the road, using the pending dissolution of the playing group as motivation. "It's the last time this group will be together and that's a fact," he said. "The penny dropped on that with a few people. It's a finals game and you always get that little bit of intensity.
