THE irresistible force of Darren Weir, his jack-of-all-trades Irish jockey John Allen and the dashing Renew combined to turn Wednesday’s Galleywood Hurdle into a near flawless romp.

Just a half-hour after a maiden hurdle left one horse dead and two riderless, Renew provided a no-stress counterbalance of relentless running and jumping.

The Galleywood had appeared an enticing clash of star hurdlers Arch Fire, Angelology, Renew and newcomer John Monash but Renew, thrust rather than cuddled into each jump by a masterful Allen, ran them off their legs.

On the line, the one-time Cups prospect had nine lengths to spare over Honey Steel’s Gold and Urban Explorer. Arch Fire simply couldn’t keep up with Renew, dropping out of the placings after settling within striking distance.

It was a result of sheer star power.

Renew, imported from Europe by successful syndication group OTI a handful of years ago, had “lost his way’’ on the flat, according to Allen, but he has been recycled to become the most exciting jumper in the state, now unbeaten in three hurdle starts.

The Galleywood took Allen’s carnival haul with a day to go to five, one short of Dean Yendall’s record. Allen’s winners have come on the flat and over the obstacles, confirming Weir’s long-held view that Allen is the greatest horseman he has worked with.

Weir, also, is a remarkable horseman, as adept with Group 1 horses as bush battlers, sprinter as marathon jumpers.

Weir won the Galleywood in 2016 with Gingerboy but Renew appeared more impressive.

Allen said a weight advantage over Arch Fire and Angelology played a major role in his foot-to-the-floor tactics.

“I wanted to make it a good test today because all the good horses had big weights. I wanted to try to make them chase us,’’ he said. “This (jumping) has given him a new lease of life and he will be a star hopefully.’’

Weir was impressed with the flawless display of horse and rider.

“He ran really well today,” the trainer said. “He jumped terrific. After he jumped the second jump he got into a beautiful rhythm and he let him roll.

“He (Allen) made him jump them and the horse responded well to him.’’
