A Melbourne man has been killed after losing control of a motorcycle in New Mexico, police in the United States say.

The 76-year-old man from Toorak, in Melbourne's south east, was riding the bike on State Road 104 on Wednesday afternoon, New Mexico State Police said.

The road is around two hours' drive from the state's capital of Albuquerque.

"The driver was ejected from the motorcycle, he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said.

The crash is still under investigation.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) said it was providing assistance to the family of an Australian man who has died in the United States.

DFAT did not provide any further information for privacy reasons.
