The Brisbane Roar beat Western Sydney in a sudden-death penalty shootout, with back-up goalkeeper Jamie Young saving the Wanderers' sixth attempt.

Young was only in the game after in-form gloveman Michael Theo went off with a late knee injury, but the second-choice keeper stood up to save Jumpei Kusukami's tame effort.

The shootout came after 120 minutes of play, at the end of which the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 thanks to some remarkable goalkeeping.

Theo had looked just about impossible to pass through the first half, making one incredible save after another while the Wanderers created the best chances, but even he could not keep the Roar from going into the break one goal down.

With the siren imminent, Brendon Santalab was brought down in the box and Terry Antonis blasted his shot through the hands of a diving Theo.

But, 10 minutes after the break, the Roar found an equaliser as two of their biggest attacking weapons combined.

Brandon Borrello found the right post with a rocket of a shot, which rebounded into the path of Jamie Maclaren, who belted home on 55 minutes.

It looked like that combo would combine in similar fashion for the winner in the 90th minute, only to be kept out by some Vedran Janjetovic brilliance.

Borrello, on the end of a long ball from Thomas Broich, fired a volley from the corner of the six-yard box, but Janjetovic produced a stunning save to keep it out.

The ball was still in play, taking a high bounce off the woodwork. It appeared it would carry to Maclaren on the opposite side of the goal, but it took another bounce off the crossbar, and the next shot was deflected away.

Borrello was constantly threatening, but could not find the back of the net again until he potted the first of the shootout.
