Smashed vehicles are seen after a car went out-of-control in a Victorian car park.

WITNESSES are in shock after seeing a runaway four wheel drive lose control and fly through the air for “six or seven metres”, before hitting and killing a four-year-old boy in the car park of a Victorian medical centre.

The boy was walking hand-in-hand with his father when he was struck by the vehicle, Victoria Police have since confirmed.

The vehicle allegedly travelled over a median strip in Berwick, in southeast Melbourne, before ploughing into cars and a garden, flying through the air and hitting three pedestrians, including the little boy. The four-year-old is believed to have been crushed between two parked cars that were hit by the 4WD.

Witnesss Cameron Smith said the vehicle flew for “six or seven metres” after becoming airborne.

It is believed the driver stated he had undergone dialysis and had blood taken just before the incident.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said “as he (the driver) was negotiating a left-hand bend, the driver for some reason failed to take the bend.”

“On entering that car park he’s struck a small child pedestrian who was walking with his father, then that land cruiser has come to rest next to some parked cars,” he said.

“Unfortunately as a result of that collision, the young child has died whilst trying to be saved and taken to hospital by air.

“The father’s gone out with his son, holding his hand, doing what good dads do and this outcome’s come up on them very, very suddenly.

“These [parents] are really traumatised. It is the most horrible, horrible thing you could imagine.”

Staff at the medical centre did everything they could but “they couldn’t have done any more than they did. They were straight into CPR, attempting to revive and resuscitate this young man.”

Ten News journalist Katherine Firkin, who is on the scene, talked to witnesses who were travelling behind the car that lost control. The witnesses attended to the boy after he was hit and attempted to console the four-year-old’s father.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene. The driver, an unidentified male believed to be in his 50s, is currently speaking with police. News.com.au understands the boy was with his parents at the time while all three people who were hit were on foot.

“It was pretty dramatic and pretty horrendous,” Ms Firkin told news.com.au.

Traffic has been described as “mayhem” after the “nasty” crash in the carpark of the Epworth Specialist Centre when the vehicle smashed into at least five cars outside the medical facility around midday Friday.

The witnesses were “absolutely hysterical” when they were told the young boy had died.

Ms Firkin described the woman “falling to the ground”, while her husband tried to console her.

“Both of them were shaken up,” Firkin said.

“The woman said she had children of her own, she was shaking and crying and couldn’t believe something like this happened in broad daylight standing outside a medical centre.

“She said it was like watching the whole thing in slow motion and seeing the boy struck was terrible.”

Another witness from across the road of the accident told The Age, “All I heard was a big bang. It’s very sad.”

Visuals taken from a Seven News helicopter from above the incident show a 4WD flipped on its side with its windscreen smashed, while numerous smashed cars surround it. The cause of the accident is currently unclear but Victoria Police told news.com.au that Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

Two adults were injured, unrelated to the child, one woman with minor injuries.

“Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after three pedestrians were struck by a four wheel drive in Berwick,” a statement from Victoria police read.

“It is believed that just before midday a light green 100 series Toyota LandCruiser was driving on Kangan Drive.

“The four wheel drive has driven through a car park and struck and killed a 4-year-old boy.”

Paramedics and firefighters were also on the scene.

“A man, believed to be in his 50s, was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

“A woman, believed to be in her 60s, was taken to Casey Hospital with minor injuries.”
