Nintendo confirmed this week that it will discontinue worldwide production of the popular NES Classic.

Nintendo plans to follow the success of its NES Classic Edition mini game console with the release of a miniature version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in time for this year's holiday-shopping season, Eurogamer reported Wednesday.

This comes after Nintendo announced this week that it will no longer make the NES mini console, which became a hard-to-find item when it was released late last year. CNET's Scott Stein called the mini NES console "your childhood in a brilliant little box." The all-in-one console came with 30 classic NES games, including Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda.

The original NES system, an 8-bit console, was launched in the 1980s. The original Super Nintendo, a 16-bit console, came out in the early 1990s.

Nintendo did not immediately return a request for comment.
