A STREAMING mishap may spoil Harry Styles’ shot at a No. 1 single this week.
Streaming giant Spotify suffered a glitch which delayed Styles’ solo debut Sign of the Times being available to listen to when released last Friday.
Spotify has been approached for comment on the issue.
Sign of the Times was initially languishing on the Spotify chart, but has now shot to No. 11 in Australia with around 116,000 streams daily.
That is still a long way from the song Styles needs to topple to reach No. 1 on next week’s ARIA chart, Ed Sheeran’s Shape of Youwhich is scoring 186,000 streams daily.
Sign of the Times was initially dominating iTunes sales — the ARIA singles chart is compiled by calculating downloads with streaming figures.
However after initially selling four times as many copies as the Chainsmokers’ Something Just Like This on iTunes, the gap has closed. The Chainsmokers overlapped Styles on Thursday, before Styles leapfrogged them.
The ARIA charts are compiled on Thursday nights and announced on Saturday afternoon.
Sheeran has been No. 1 for 13 weeks with Shape of You. ABBA’s Waterloo holds the record for the longest-running No. 1 when they topped the charts for 14 weeks in 1976.
Sheeran’s other competition is himself, with his next single Galway Girl at No. 2 on the ARIA chart. No. 2 on Spotify is Drake’s Passionfruit.
