TRAINER James Cummings has promising filly Whispered Secret poised to emulate stablemate Prized Icon’s twin two-year-old triumphs at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Whispered Secret is backing up after her impressive in the Fernhill Handicap last week and is one of the main chances for the Group 1 $500,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m).
Cummings won both feature two-year-old races with top colt Prized Icon last season and said he has used that experience to prepare Whispered Secret for the Champagne Stakes.

“I did keep in mind what we did with Prized Icon but they are two very different two-year-olds,’’ Cummings said. “They had different preparations going into the Fernhill. Prized Icon was running in all the good races while Whispered Secret had to win her maiden at Newcastle.
“But her win that day was very good as she came from an impossible position against older horses and put them away with a brilliant turn of foot.
“She then went to the Fernhill last week and ran a ‘PB’ (personal best). She came through last week’s run really so well that we felt there is every opportunity for her to run well again (Saturday) as she is only fourth-up. I do think she will probably need to run a ‘PB’ again to win.’’
Cummings didn’t hesitate when asked to nominate the horse to beat in the Champagne Stakes.
“I have a lot of respect for Invader, he is a top colt and has already got to a peak with a thoroughly convincing win in the Sires,’’ Cummings said. “My filly is a long way off proving herself at that level yet. But if she can run top three then that would be a wonderful result for her (breeding) page.’’
Cummings has a good team entered for the Randwick meting including the improving Smart Amelia in the Group 3 $150,000 JHB Carr Stakes (1400m).
Smart Amelia ran on late for third to Diddums and Prompt Response in the PJ Bell Stakes two weeks ago and those three fillies clash again on Saturday. “Smart Amelia gets the opportunity to run out 1400m strongly. She is nicely placed in these fillies races,’’ Cummings said. “It would be lovely to see her breakthrough and add to her black type placing.’’
Cummings saddles up emerging young stayers Rock And Swing and Rokda Kasba in the Group 3 $150,000 Frank Packer Plate (2000m), while talented Ruling Dynasty can sprint well fresh in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy (1400m) to close the program.
# ENGLISH was passed fit by Racing NSW veterinarians on Friday morning to defend her title in the Group 1 $600,000 All Aged Stakes on Saturday.
