The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has shelved plans to create a roof walk and zip line at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The club won $650,000 in Victorian Government funding to develop the $2.5 million concept which would allow sports fans to walk across part of the MCG's roof and fly between the grandstands on a harnessed flying fox.
The zip line was to run from scoreboard to scoreboard, while the walk would take place at the city-end of the stadium.
The MCC's Prue Chichello said the money would be returned because the idea was on hold.
"It's very important that you get that right and at this stage we're not confident we can find a solution that can work within the parameters that we have, be it cost and structure and safety and what-not," she said.
Ms Chichello said the biggest challenge was coming up with a design that could accommodate the varying roof heights across the stadium, the heavy events schedule and fears of a cost blow-out.
But she said the idea was not off the table forever.
"People feel a very strong connection to the ground, it's got a special place in everyone's hearts, so the idea of experiencing that in a new way, be that in a roof walk or zipping across the top of it certainly did capture people's attention," she said.
"We're definitely looking to find other opportunities and other tourism elements that might appeal to that audience again."
