VICTORIA is facing a battering from wild weather, with strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding, and snow forecast for some areas of the state as the mercury plummets.
Residents have been warned to expect a wild finish to the weekend, with possible power outages and flash flooding as a cold front heads through the state, bringing with it severe winds of up to 100kph on Sunday afternoon.
At 8am today, it was 16C in Melbourne, but that dipped rapidly to about 12C as the cold front began too bite.
The Bureau of Meteorology said Victoria’s central district would receive the most rain, with some isolated falls of up to 60mm expected in Melbourne.
Melbourne is on flash flood watch, ahead of a strong of storms which early forecasts tipped could deliver more rain than April’s total average rainfall.
A severe weather warning has been issued for a large part of the state, while flash flooding warnings are in place for Bacchus Marsh and Geelong.
As temperatures plummeted, snow hit the high country, with Victoria’s Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, and Mount Buller experiencing flurries..
Some parts of Melbourne may receive hail overnight.
Fall Creek resort tweeted that the first snow started falling after temperatures plunged below zero about 2pm.
More snow is forecast tonight. and through Monday with flurries above 1200m.
The alpine areas have been belted by high winds, with gusts of up to 119kph at Mount Hotham on Sunday morning.
Across the border, a slight dusting of snow had begun falling in the NSW high country by 4pm Sunday, with Snowsreach Australia tweeting a picture of the very top of Thredbo resort, as it started to settle.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the heaviest rain will hit Melbourne tonight, after 7pm, as the state shivers.
Meanwhile, dangerous surf conditions forced the closure of beaches at Portsea, Gunnamatta, Barwon Heads, Venus Bay and Lakes Entrance.
