Cyclone Debbie off the coast of north Queensland.

COWBOYS officials are closely monitoring the movements of Cyclone Debbie which could affect Friday night’s NRL clash against the Rabbitohs.

The tropical cyclone is expected to cross the Queensland coast near Townsville early on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting Cyclone Debbie to reach the intensity of a category 4 storm before it makes landfall. Significant rainfall is also expected.

The Cowboys are scheduled to host South Sydney at 1300SMILES Stadium in Townsville on Friday.

“At this stage, it’s too early to make any hard and fast plans around our Friday night fixture against the Rabbitohs,” Cowboys CEO Greg Tonner said.

“We’re watching the situation closely and keeping in contact with local authorities on the ground, as well as monitoring Bureau of Meteorology bulletins.

“The club, in conjunction with the NRL and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, will follow expert advice as to whether the game will go ahead and we’ll not put anybody at risk.’’
