McDonald's claims its Twitter account was hacked after its corporate account posted a derogatory tweet about US President Donald Trump.

A tweet from the McDonald's Corp official Twitter handle said Mr Trump was a "disgusting excuse of a president".

The tweet said: "@realdonaldtrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a President and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tiny hands."

The tweet was up for about 25 minutes, pinned to the top of the page before being taken down from the Twitter account.

McDonald's corporate Twitter page said in a follow-up tweet that their account had been compromised and they were investigating the incident.

In the aftermath of the event, #BoycottMcDonalds began trending on Twitter.
