Bali: A former West Australian bricklayer who was busted with hashish at his Sanur home has been sentenced to seven months' jail for possessing an illegal narcotic for personal use.
Guiseppe "Joe" Serafino, who had lived in Bali for five years and managed the On-On Billiard Bar in Sanur, was arrested by police on October 8 with 7.32 grams of hashish.
He then helped police set up a sting on former war correspondent David Fox, whom he called begging for hashish to ease his back pain.
Fox, who was arrested at On-On Billiard Bar, was also jailed for seven months last week on the same charge.
The sentences are minus time already served in jail, which means both men will be released in a couple of months.
Serafino, 49, spat at a news cameraman and threw water at a photographer, ahead of his verdict and sentencing in Denpasar District Court on Tuesday.
Head Judge Erwin Djong said Serafino had used the hashish for medicinal purposes to suppress pain.
In a letter submitted to the court, West Australian doctor Colin Hughes said Serafino had self-medicated with cannabis to treat chronic pain from long-standing spinal problems, leading to long term dependence and addiction.
Judge Djong said that it was illegal to use hashish in Indonesia and required a government permit. "The defendant used hashish without consent from the government and therefore the prosecutors' part of the indictment is proven," he said.
"What the defendant did is against the government program to eradicate narcotics," he said.
