The two accountants behind the bungle that saw La La Land accidentally awarded best picture at Monday's Oscars ceremony have been dumped by the Academy.
A spokesperson for the Academy Awards confirmed to Fairfax Media PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz will no longer be involved in Hollywood's most prestigious awards ceremony.
Jimmy Kimmel explains the Oscars blunder
It's what everyone is talking about, and the Oscar's host explains what happened.
Cullinan accidentally handed presenter Warren Beatty a spare envelope for Best Actress category, instead of the slip for Best Picture. By the time the slip-up was rectified, La La Land's team were already on stage and had given almost two minutes of emotional speeches.Â
There have been suggestions Cullinan was distracted by Twitter just moments before the embarrassing mix-up. The accountant tweeted, but has since deleted, a backstage photo around the same time Beatty and his fellow co-presenter for Best Picture, Faye Dunaway, walked onto the stage.
PwC has said Cullinan feels terrible about the incident. While he and Ruiz will not return to the Oscars next year in an official capacity, the company has confirmed both will remain partners at the top-tier accounting firm.Â
In a now deleted interview with blogging website Medium, Cullinan said his role has stayed the same at the Oscars over the past four years thanks to his reputation for ensuring everything is "accurate".Â
"So far, there's never been a problem," he said.Â
On Thursday, Oscars organisers also apologised to an Australian producer whose photo was incorrectly used for the in memoriam tribute.
A photo of Jan Chapman was used as a send-off for her late friend and fellow Australian Janet Patterson, a four-time Oscar-nominated costume designer. After the ceremony, Chapman told Fairfax Media she was "devastated" by the mistake.Â
"We sincerely apologise to producer Jan Chapman, whose photo was mistakenly used," the Academy said in a statement. "We [also] extend our deepest apologies and condolences to the Patterson family."Â
