Malcolm Turnbull is meeting with members of cabinet's energy committee and Energy Australia representatives as the government seeks to find a role for coal in its climate policy.

The meeting in Sydney on Tuesday comes as the prime minister weighs up changes to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation's rules for investing taxpayers' money in renewable energy.

The current laws prevent the CEFC from investing in carbon capture and storage, which Mr Turnbull says is essential if the government is to support clean coal power stations as a way of cutting carbon emissions.
