UPDATE: A fire at a Thomastown soap factory is now under control after at least 14 fire crews battled the blaze which was threatening neighbouring properties.

At least 14 crews had been deployed to battle the Thomastown blaze, with the building on the verge of collapsing.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters have since brought the inferno under control and paramedics are on standby, though are yet to treat anyone.

The cause is yet to be determined.

Crews were called to the factory on Macquarie Drive about 6am.

They found the factory consumed by fire and initially had difficulty gaining access to the area.

Smoke is billowing southward but there is currently no threat to the community.

The Macquarie Drive and Inglewood Drive are closed and people are being advised to avoid the area.

More to come.
