ALMOST 9000 homes across Sydney and the NSW Central Coast have had their power cut off by the heatwave.
In the city, the temperature has soared to almost 40C and homes in Crows Nest, in Sydney’s north, and Punchbowl and Bankstown, in Sydney’s south west, have been most affected.
An Ausgrid spokeswoman told ABC Radio Sydney crews were attempting to restore electricity.
“On a hot day, heat can be a factor but we still need to investigate and test the faults to see if that’s the case,†Ausgrid’s Zoe Allebone said.
“Obviously on such a hot day we understand it’s very inconvenient for our customers to have the aircon go off, or the fan go off, and we do apologise for that inconvenience.
“Demand is running higher than say this time last week on the network ... and it is a result of people using their appliances, but the network is definitely operating within capacity so at this stage we don’t believe that it’s any issue to do with the load on the network.â€
About 3900 customers have lost power in the Punchbowl, Greenacre, Bankstown, Mount Lewis, Padstow and Wiley Park areas.
In Sydney’s north, 500 homes have had their power cut in Chatswood West, Lindfield and North Ryde.
About 50 homes in both Roseville and North Epping have been affected, as well as 30 in West Ryde and Denistone West.
Almost 2000 homes have had power cut off in Naremburn and Crows Nest and 1600 buildings in Erina and Green Point on the Central Coast.
