Victoria's road toll in the new year has climbed by two higher than the same time last year after an 80-year-old man died in the state's north-east on Saturday morning.

A man in his late 80s was killed after his car veered off Kealy Road, Benalla and crashed into a tree.

The man, who is believed to be the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

His death follows that of a 17-year-old girl who died after a two-car collision in Scarsdale, near Ballarat on Friday afternoon.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said a Ford Telstar and Toyota Hilux collided at the intersection of the Old Glenelg Highway and Glenelg Highway about 5pm.

The teenage passenger in the Telstar, from Scarsdale, was killed.

"The driver of the Telstar, a 34-year-old Creswick man, was taken to a Melbourne hospital with non-life threatening injuries," Ms Johnson said.

"The three occupants of the Toyota Hilux - a 25-year-old Scarsdale man who was driving, a 57-year-old Queensland man and a 50-year-old Scarsdale woman – were all taken to a local hospital for observation."

Ms Johnson said the exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

This brings the total lives lost this year to four, two more than this time last year.

Anyone who witnessed the crashes is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
