Dan & Maz won’t be on air next year.
YOU can’t help but feel like Dan Debuf and Maz Compton got screwed around by radio network Southern Cross Austereo.
They were poached from Nova back in 2013 to host a national night show on SCA before being promoted to the national drive show in 2014.
In 2015 after it was announced that Hamish and Andy would be returning to the coveted drive slot halfway through the year, Dan and Maz were given the tough task of hosting the Sydney breakfast show.
Still reeling from Kyle and Jackie O’s departure in 2013, the 2Day FM breakfast slot was always going to be a challenge for Dan and Maz and after just eight months the network announced they would be replaced in 2016 by Rove McManus and Sam Frost.
Dan and Maz spent most of this year hosting a national weekend show on SCA but last weekend they officially hung up their headphones and announced they won’t be returning to radio in 2017.
Seems like a rough ride, doesn’t it? “Not really,†Dan Debuf said to news.com.au.
“It’s show business with a capital B,†the comedian said.
“When you look at all the things we’ve got to do, the places we’ve been, the people we’ve met, it would be very hard to say, ‘Gee, we had a rough run, didn’t we?’
“We’ve managed to do everything that would be on anyone’s radio bucket list. We were the number one national FM drive show and we hosted Sydney breakfast. We just happened to do it all in the space of about four years.â€

After 10 years in the industry, Debuf leaves radio with nothing but fond memories and is happy to admit that he still pinches himself when he thinks about the experiences he’s had.
“I got to interview George R.R. Martin on stage for an hour going deeply into the plot points of his [Game of Thrones] books,†he said, “People would pay thousands of dollars for that opportunity and I got to do it as part of my job.â€
“I remember when I was 19 and Shaun Micallef came to Perth and I was met him backstage and it was one of the most amazing moments of my life and then you fast forward 10 years and he was a frequent guest on our show. That is just mind blowing!â€
At 31 years of age, Debuf says that for all he knows this could still be the very beginning of his radio career and if he is ever to return to the airwaves he’d love to do it alongside his long time co-host, Maz Compton.
“We aren’t sitting around forming a battle plan in our war room, but never say never,†he said.
“Dan and Maz is the best thing that I’ve ever been a part of creatively ... they were the best years of my life.â€
With 2017 just around the corner, Debuf says he has already received a few emails with potential offers but right now all he’s thinking about is his sketch comedy group.
“We’re called Lords of Luxury and we’re going to do a show at Perth Fringe in January so I’ll be focusing on that and then seeing what the world has to offer,†he said.
