Police are appealing for assistance to name the man, whose identity has remained a mystery for 55 years after his body was found in parkland on Belmont Road, Croydon on April 25, 1961.

Although his death was not treated as suspicious, police are yet to discover his identity.

A police artist has released a facial reconstruction in the hopes of identifying him, Maroondah Crime Investigation Unit Leading Senior Constable Beth Heale said.

“For the past 55 years, this man has remained nameless,” she said.

“We are appealing for anyone who thinks they recognise this man to come forward and help shed some light on this mystery.

“There must be someone out there who knew this man and we are really keen to speak to them.”

At the time of death, the clean-shaven man was believed to be aged around 40 and 180cm tall, with slim build, dark hair and sallow complexion.

The man’s first and second toes were joined together and it is believed he underwent surgery to separate the equivalent fingers.

He was also found wearing a grey coat, khaki trousers, check shirt, blue jumper, navy blue singlet and thick-soled black boots.

The laundry mark “Bartram–L9” was printed on his hip pocket and a pink DJ Special bicycle was also found nearby.
