The fatalities come as the state government and police launched their holiday road safety campaigns.

For the next 50 days Queensland Police will be stepping up their visible presence on the state’s roads targeting speeding and drink driving.

“Throughout the campaign, we’ll be rolling out a series of intelligence-driven traffic operations such as random driver testing for alcohol and drugs and speed enforcement on roads and highways in key high-risk areas,” Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said.

Mr Gollschewski said the best way for Queenslanders to enjoy the festive season is to not drink if you’re driving to an event or not drive if you know you will be drinking.

“It’s a simple as that,” he said.

Last year 33 people lost their lives and more than 2000 were injured on Queensland’s roads during the busy holiday period.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the government was “absolutely determined” to reduce the carnage on Queensland roads this Christmas.

“Our Christmas wish would be to repeat this year’s Easter long weekend where the state recorded no fatalities, the lowest amount in more than 20 years,” he said.

The “fatal five” top causes of deaths on the road are speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, driving while fatigued and driving with distraction and inattention.
