SLAIN standover man Pasquale Barbaro invited Brothers 4 Life boss Farhad Qaumi to an $80,000 New Year’s Eve party on a luxury yacht telling him supermodel Miranda Kerr would be there, a murder trial has heard.
A former member of Brothers 4 Life, who can’t be identified, told the court during today’s proceedings of the trial for the murder of debt collector Joe Antoun, that Sydney crime kingpin Barbaro invited Qaumi to the party saying it was in his honour and that, “the biggest gangsters in Australia were comingâ€.
But the NYE party on December 31, 2013 on luxury yacht Oscar II ended in bloodshed when Qaumi was shot through the shoulder.
The man, whose is known only as Witness J for legal reasons, told the court he had been suspicious of Barbaro’s generous offer to Qaumi.
Mr Qaumi’s lawyer John Stratton SC quizzed Witness J about the meeting he, Farhad Qaumi and Barbaro had at the Cosmopolitan cafe at Double Bay in December 2013 when the mafia-linked crime boss invited Qaumi to the party.
Mr Stratton asked Witness J: “Did he say to Farhad Qaumi, ‘you are the star bro it is all for you and Miranda Kerr is coming’?â€
“Yeah he did say that,†Witness J replied.
“It is a celebration for you and you are the main event. It is your party and Miranda Kerr is going to be there,†Mr Stratton said
“Yeah that is what he said,†Witness J replied.
“He said the party was going to cost him $80,000?†Mr Stratton asked.
“I can’t remember it was the exact figure but he said something big,†Witness J replied.
Witness J agreed with Mr Stratton that he was suspicious about the party because Mr Barbaro “barely knew†Qaumi.
“You don’t trust the guy ... you think it is a bit weird that a bloke that you just met wants to spend all this money on you, don’t you think it sounds too good to be true?†Mr Stratton asked.
“Yeah something along those lines,†Witness J replied.
Witness J told the court that he went to the party along with Farhad and Mumtaz Qaumi and other B4L members.
He told the court all the B4L members left the yacht around 10.30pm but Farhad stayed on board.
“When you got off the boat did you see two men standing on shore? Did the two men start shooting at the boat?†Mr Stratton asked.
“Yeah, but a bit later after we started walking away,†Witness J replied.
Mr Stratton later clarified if the supermodel ever attended the party asking Witness J: “As it happened, Miranda Kerr wasn’t there?â€
“Yeah she wasn’t there,†Witness J responded.
Earlier at the trial, a senior gang member on trial for the murder of debt collector Joe Antoun shouted, “f***ing rat,†at a witness.
Brothers 4 Life gang member Mumtaz Qaumi shouted at the witness, after the man gave evidence that his brother and co-accused Farhad Qaumi had told the man that someone needed to move a .38 revolver that had been stashed in bushland at Penrith following Mr Antoun’s murder.
The witness’s identity is suppressed, but he is a former member of the Blacktown chapter of Brothers 4 Life.
Mumtaz and Farhad Qaumi have pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Antoun, who was shot dead by a hired hitman at the front door of his Strathfield home on December 16, 2013.
It is alleged the Qaumi brothers were contracted to kill Mr Antoun.
The man, who is serving a sentence for gang-related criminal activities, is being asked about Mumtaz and Farhad Qaumi’s movements in the days after Mr Antoun’s death.
He told the court that some time in December he went with Farhad to Double Bay to meet career criminal Pasqaule Barbaro at the Cosmopolitan cafe.
He said the pair discussed their New Year’s Eve plans to hire a luxury yacht called the Oscar II.
During those celebrations Farhad Qaumi was shot in the shoulder.
In a strange twist Barbaro was gunned down as he got out of a car outside colourful construction identity George Alex’s house at Earlwood on Monday night.
There is no suggestion Mr Alex had anything to do with Barbaro’s’ death.
The judge-alone trial before Justice Peter Hamill continues.
